Life in the 21st-Century Workforce: Three New Cities Released
As part of a multi-city study of the U.S. employment landscape, Apollo Research Institute released Life in the 21st-Century Workforce for three metropolitan areas: Kansas City; Washington, DC; and Philadelphia. The study explores employer and worker perspectives on the education and skills that are needed for workforce success. Each report was presented at Career Innovation 2012, a career event series offered by Career Builder and University of Phoenix.
Women Are Earning Degrees for the Jobs of Tomorrow
Women are preparing themselves for the jobs of the future by pursuing higher education. They now comprise 57% of college students and 59% of graduate students, and are expected to earn 60% of all bachelor’s degrees by 2019. The choice to advance their education will serve women well in the job market, as the five fastest-growing job clusters require 70% to 94% of workers to have postsecondary degrees. Apollo Research Institute has interviewed more than 150 women executives and entrepreneurs, who almost unanimously agreed that earning a bachelor’s degree was a necessary prerequisite for the jobs of tomorrow. Many recommended pursuing advanced degrees as well. Most of these women were or had been involved in some form of continuing education, either by returning to school for advanced degrees, earning professional certificates, or engaging in self-directed study.

Future Work Skills 2020: Social Intelligence
Social technologies have introduced novel ways to form relationships online, but the instantaneous nature of having a status update “liked” or retweeted might make these interactions seem deeper than they are. As social networks become integral to the workplace and workers partner with clients and teammates 140 characters at a time, individuals must learn to communicate in these virtual spaces with as much nuance and depth as they do face-to-face.
Social intelligence can help establish collegial and productive online work relationships, whether the goal is to collaborate with overseas colleagues, launch an organization’s Facebook page, or simply build a professional reputation. This ability to make meaningful connections both online and in person will become a key workforce differentiator, according to Future Work Skills 2020, a report by Institute for the Future for Apollo Research Institute. The report pinpoints social intelligence as one of 10 key proficiencies required for success during the next decade.
