The University of Phoenix partnered with The Atlantic to publish Recalibrating the Classroom: Working and Learning in the 21st Century, a collection of reports that examine America's 21st-century education landscape and the demands of the evolving workplace. The collection features Future Work Skills 2020, a report by the Institute for the Future for University of Phoenix Research Institute, and Extraordinary Commitment: Challenges and Achievements of Today’s Working Learner, by the University of Phoenix Knowledge Network.
League Connections, a publication by the League for Innovation in the Community College, published the article U.S. Workers Fall Short of Employers' Needs for Foreign Language Proficiency, by Leslie A. Miller, PhD, PHR, Executive Director of Research at the University of Phoenix Research Institute. The article notes that workers' intent to become proficient in Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish was lower than employers' anticipated demand for these languages across every industry sector.

Timely New Study on Manufacturing
In June, President Barack Obama expressed support for the manufacturing skills certification system endorsed by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). Industry leaders assessed the value of skills credentialing in the University of Phoenix Research Institute study, Creating Value from HR: The New Credentialed Manufacturing Workforce, by Ruby A. Rouse, PhD, and Leslie A. Miller, PhD, PHR. The study found that manufacturers reported value from using the NAM-Endorsed Manufacturing Skills Certification System. Those who used the system reported lower recruiting costs.

Top Gun Institutions for Service Members
Collaborating with military and educational subject matter experts and military students, researchers at the University of Phoenix Research Institute are creating a "top gun" educational rating system that will help identify schools most suited to meet the unique needs of service members. The study, Top Gun Institutions of Higher Education: A Military-Focused Educational Profile Separating the Best from the Rest, by Leslie A. Miller, PhD, PHR, Doug Herrmann, PhD, and Ruby A. Rouse, PhD, will be published in fall 2011.

Expert Panel: Nursing Shortage and Solutions
Over 100 leaders in higher education, business, and public policy attended the expert panel event, Critical Conditions: Preparing the 21st-Century Nursing Workforce, sponsored by the University of Phoenix Research Institute in Washington, DC, June 21.
Drawing on the Research Institute’s latest studies on nursing education and work skills, VP and Managing Director Dr. Tracey Wilen-Daugenti convened and led two panels of leaders in nursing education, healthcare delivery, technology, and policy to discuss the current nursing shortage and solutions for the future of the profession. Panelists included experts from Case Western Reserve University, Stanford University, UnitedHealth Group, Inova Health System, Fresenius Medical Care, the Oncology Nursing Society, Medical Simulation Design, and University of Phoenix.
The event attracted a maximum-capacity audience at the National Press Club, with approximately 85% of attendees from higher education institutions, 10% from policy organizations, and 5% from healthcare and other businesses. The audience contributed actively to the post-panel Q&A session. Participants included college presidents, nursing deans, CEOs, and presidents of nursing industry associations. The Research Institute will publish a special report on the event, video clips of panel highlights, and nursing-related research findings in fall 2011.
Triple Helix IX International Conference
Dr. Tracey Wilen-Daugenti, VP and Managing Director of the University of Phoenix Research Institute, will participate in the workshop Entrepreneurial University: (R)Evolutionary Transformation or Heresy? at the Triple Helix IX International Conference in Palo Alto, California on July 11-14. Hosted by Stanford University's Human Sciences and Technologies Advanced Research Institute (H-STAR) and the Triple Helix Research Group, the conference will address Silicon Valley as an innovation center with implications for higher education, industry, and government.

ACUTA Summer 2011 Seminar
Technological transformations are redefining how we learn, work, and live. Dr. Tracey Wilen-Daugenti, VP and Managing Director of the University of Phoenix Research Institute, will speak on technology-driven changes affecting the future of work, education, and society at the ACUTA Summer 2011 Seminar, hosted by the Association for Information Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education, in Baltimore on July 17-20.

Transition STEM
Leslie A. Miller, PhD, PHR, executive director of research at the University of Phoenix Research Institute, will participate as a panelist on two panels at Transition STEM: A Wounded Warriors Think Tank focused on helping veterans with service-connected disabilities transition into science, technology, engineering, and math-based fields. Panel topics are "Warriors Working: Careers in STEM Fields" and "Warriors Earning Degrees: Retention and Attainment Strategies for Higher Ed." Hosted by the University of Missouri-Kansas City Institute for Human Development and School of Computing and Engineering, the conference will take place in Kansas City, July 27-28.
Adult Education Research Conference
